Medaram Sammakka Saralamma jatara is asia's largest tribal festival.Sammakka Saralamma Jatara or Medaram Jatara is a festival of honouring the Hindu goddesses, celebrated in the state of Telangana, India. This Jatara is known for witnessing one of the largest people gatherings in the world. People offer Bangarm (jaggery) .The Jatara begins at Medaram in Tadvai mandal in Mulugu district. The rituals related to the Goddesses are entirely conducted by Koya tribe priests, in accordance with Koya customs and traditions.
Medaram is a remote place in the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary, a part of Dandakaranya, the largest surviving forest belt in the Deccan.
Once declare a national festival a, jatara can be considered for 'intangible cultural heritage of humanity' tag of UNESCO. Jatara celebrated during the time the goddesses of the tribals are believed to visit them. It is believed that after Kumbha Mela, the Medaram jatara attracts the largest number of devotees in the country.it is very Asia's largest tribal festival which is celebrated in telangana.
The jatara venue is situated at about 100 km from Warangal, 170 km from Karimnagar, 220 km from Suryapet and 250 km from Hyderabad.
Until 1978, the only way to reach Medaram was by a bullock cart. In 1978 then the Andhra Pradesh State Government declared the 1000-yr old festival as official and laid down a motorable road. TSRTC runs multiple buses to the venue during the jatara period. Also, many private vehicles render their services for plying the visitors.
Jatara is very well facilitated with roads, drinking water, sanitation, health and hygiene by the Government of Telangana.
Historical story of Medaram:
This is the place where Lord Sri Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana made their abode for a while during their 14-year exile in the forest. It is here that Lakshmana cut off the ears and nose of Surpanakha, sister of Emperor Ravana of Sri Lanka.It is here that Rama killed maricha and destroyed 14-thousand strong infantry of Khara, Dushana and Trisira. History behind the Dandakaranya forest: Ikshvaku was the ruler of the kingdom that extended from Vindhya Mountains to Himalaya Mountains. He had hundred sons, among them Danda (danDa) on whose name this uninhabitable forest was called as dandakaranya. (Uttara Ramayana). Telangana State falls into dandakaranya area.
Medaram Jatara 2020 Dates:
Day 1 (5-02-2020) Wednesday--Goddess Saralamma Ammavaru will arrive on Gadde from Kannepally village
Day 2 (06-02-2020) Thursday--Goddess Sammakka Ammavaru will arrive on Gadde from Chilakala Gutta.
Day 3 (07-02-2020)Friday--Jathara will be in its full swing. Crores of pilgrims will have darshan of these “DEVATHAS’and will offer their “MOKKUBADULU”.
Day 4 (08-02-2020) Saturday--Afternoon Ammavarlu Vana Pravesham.
Temple Timings: During Jatara Days temple is open 24 hrs round the clock. Any day of the year(365 days), Non-Jatara days its 6am to 6pm

Hyderabad to Medaram bus fare:
The TSRTC plans to operate over 4,000 buses transporting devotees to the famous Sammakka-Sarakka jatara at Medaram village that would be held between 5th February 2020 to 8th February 2020.New fares from 53 locations across the state have been finalized.
The buses would ply from 5th February 2020 to 8th February 2020. Accordingly, the charge for an Express bus from Hyderabad to Medaram would be ₹360 per head (₹190 for children); from Hanamkonda ₹160 per head (₹90 for children).
For a Super Luxury bus fare, the charge has been fixed at Rs 470 from Hyderabad and Rs 210 from Hanamkonda.
The bus fare for Rajadhani and Vajra services would be Rs 630 from Hyderabad and Rs 290 from Hanamkonda.
During the main days, we will transport nearly 2.61 lakh people in a single day by operating 3,300 trips from Warangal.
